Spray Paint Addiction

I think I may have a problem!

It all started so innocently. My childhood rocking chair needed a little TLC so I tackled the project myself with a can of black spray paint. I was proud of my work and an obsession was born! Many cans of black spray paint later, I have completed a few more projects and I am always on the look-out for more!

Before
It may not look terrible in this picture, but it had lots of chipped paint that had yellowed.

After
Better, right?!

I am enjoying finding others out in "Blogville" that share my addiction. Joy at Joys of Home is hosting a party for us all - all the spray paint addicted, that is.

Here is my first spray paint project - brought to you by the letter "F"! I don't have a before because I never really thought I would blog about this stuff, but it was just a plain white letter from Michael's. Nothing fancy.

I loved how it turned out, although I have to admit I didn't plan for it to have the texture that (I hope) you can see in the picture. I was painting on a plastic tarp, and since I was new to spray painting, I forgot to weigh the plastic down when I went inside. I came back to the plastic laying on top of the wet black paint. But, when I pulled the plastic back, it had this cool texture. Everyone that has seen it thought that I either bought it that way or that I meant to do it!

Here is my latest Michael's find - this ceramic urn was 90% off the other day. Yep. I had to look twice too. 90% off!!! I got 2 of them for $4 a piece!

Before

Now, here is where I have to give credit where credit is due. I would have never, EVER thought about buying something to change it before I was enlightened by some wonderful designers who blog (see my blog roll!). I would have passed right by. I probably would have said something like, "Wow! Those are really tacky!" or "No wonder they are 90% off!". But, instead I thought, "I might be able to paint those black and use them for Halloween!" Maybe like this project?

After

I have a few projects that are going to take actual sanding and priming that I'll be starting soon. I'll let you know who they turn out! I am really looking forward to seeing what other bloggers are painting! Hop on over to Joy's party to see!

I never knew you could spray paint ceramic! I thought it wouldn't stick to the glaze. Now I need to check my Michaels store for some of those urns. Topped with some pumpkins they would make great fall decoations on the porch:>)

Thanks for visiting my blog! :o) I love your spray paint projects. Your chair came out great! The letter? TOO FUNNY! What a great "mistake!" You found an awesome deal on those urns! I was just at Michaels on Saturday but now I have the urge to run out and look again!

How come my spray paint mistakes are drip marks and yours are pretty textures? Not fair! lol ;)

I love all of your projects. My Michael's didn't have those pretty urns...I know because I have been scouring their clearance aisles for a few weeks now...darn!

Nice to meet you,
Bella

I have to say reading all these design blogs have really made me change my perspective too. I have more projects than I can handle and have spent so much less than ever before. It is so much fun. Great deal on those urns. I was at Michaels on Saturday and there were on empty 90% off shelves. Maybe next time I will hit good luck.

What great projects! I don't usually jump in the car for a long drive to purchase something that I don't need ... but today may be the day! Those urns are too cute! :o)

Looks like you now belong to the sisterhood of spray painters---you have the paint finger to prove it!

I've had that same thing happen with a tarp but I never thought to leave it. The letter looks great with that texture. It's a happy mistake that everyone will want to copy.
The rocker looks great with it's makeover and those urns, with the new color, look just like you paid top dollar. They now look like they're screaming for pumpkins to be placed inside. I can't wait to see them decorated for fall.

Hi! Thanks for coming by my blog today! I love your black rocking chair. I've been on the lookout for rocking chairs at yard sales this year to paint, but just haven't found one. That urn is so cute too! I have to admit, I have a different style vase/urn/whateveryoucallit from Michaels from that same collection, but I'm actually leaving it the white/beigey color because it works well in my bedroom. But I think I only got 60% off. You got a great deal!

i love what you did with those urns, I can't believe you got them for that price, they are just what I'm looking for, in fact I've been looking for them for a couple of months, hoping to find them at that price, I've not been quite so lucky yet

isn't spray painting just amazing? I hadn't even heard of it before finding all these lovely projects in blogland, now it seems I cart home a bagful of thrifted things all the time to spray lol!

Hi,
Love those urns. What a great price! I'm like you...I am not letting the color of something stop me after seeing all these wonderful projects on blogs.

And your letter F...love the textured look. I may try that if and when I get a letter!

Seriously...you are becoming little miss domestic! I remember bringing in scrapbook idea books to Pelham Rd for you to look at. I believe that you kept them hostage for a couple of months...so I guess that you can thank me for being your "INSPIRATION" by coming to my house to decorate! Don't forget the pink spray paint for Lauren's room! And the red and blue for Braedan's!

That looks great...isn't it funny how Joy has inspired so many people to pull things out of the closet and improve what we have...

I love the texture on the letter - that's what's called a "happy accident". I like the rocking chair both way, but it's always fun to change things around!

I love them! And for $4 a piece, come on!! You did a great job!!

Also, I was looking at your letter F and thinking...hmm,I wonder how she did that texture, thats cool. Then I read it! lol You would never get the look if you tried to do it on purpose, so I wont even try! hehe

Seriously? Twenty eight comments? Isn't that a record or something?

Anyway...since you are the spray paint expert, let me ask you a question. Have you come across any blogs where someone "revamped" those standard brass chandeliers? Let me know!

I came across your webpage because I too am contemplating taking a can of black spray paint to my white childhood rocking chaie. Yours came out so great...it's giving me confidence, but I'm still scared. Did you sand the chair first?
